The God of the Lake

Updated: Apr 27, 2022

But Moses said to the Lord, "Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue." Then the Lord said to him, "Who has made man's mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord?"

~Exodus 4:10-12

When we look at the world, we can see one of two things. We can see the busyness of life, the complexities of each individual. We can see our struggles through time, accidents that seem to set us back, events in our world that seem to be unrecoverable. We see our lives as products of the world we live in. Like Moses here, we can see ourselves through the lens of the imperfect world.

The other side, is to see the world as God's creation. When we look at the world, we can recognize that it is, in fact, still God's. In that, we find peace in His protection. David writes in Psalm 121:1-2, "l lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth." In this, David is looking at the world and recognizing that it is God's creation, and that the God who made the mountains is able to protect him.

This is how God answers Moses, "Who has made man's mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord?" God is saying to him, if I have made you, surely I can use you. God responds to Job in a similar fashion. Job has everything he owns and loves taken from him and he challenges God on being able to protect him. God responds by showing Job all of creation, saying if God cares for every detail, every atom of creation, then surely he cares for his people such as Job.

To illustrate my point, I'm writing this right now in a church that has been shut down due to the ensuing virus. The few people who have shuffled in to receive private communion have all mentioned to me how crazy this world has become and how shaken the human race is right now. As the same time, I'm looking out to the lake in front of our church. This peaceful hidden lake remains unchanged throughout all of the chaos going on in our lives. The God who made the lake, has also made us. The God who tends to the lake and the water, to every detail of His creation, also tends to us.

So, in this time where the world seems to have gone mad, remember whose world this is. And find peace knowing that we are still in His hands.
