One of the things I miss most from High School is sports. Getting to be aggressive and grinding at practice, working toward the next game. I think the thing I miss most is the team, the built-in brotherhood that comes along with playing a sport.
I think a that’s the reason sports are so important to so many guys. Because men build relationships and comradery through action. Through doing stuff. Men fish and hunt together, but the strongest bonds are made when men struggle together. When men practice and struggle alongside each other. That’s why football has this strong sense of team pride. This is why we hear the phrases “man of action” and “man of few words” cause this is how guys are typically wired. God made us to build comradery through action.
God also builds relationship with us in the same way. I think this is one of the coolest things about the Christian faith, cause God got down in the dirt to struggle with us. It’s a lot like football, someone doesn’t really understand the work you put into it unless they’ve done it themselves. Someone can’t appreciate the hard work that it takes like your own teammate.
God put himself in the game, to struggle along side us, to show us that he knows what it’s like to struggle. There is nothing in this life that God doesn’t understand. Jesus had friends and family die. He gets it. Jesus was rejected and hated. He knows what that’s like. Jesus was a teenager, too and went through all the same stress that teenagers go through.
God not only came to earth to suffer life with us. But most importantly, he came down to suffer for us. To take our place willingly and die a most painful death for the sake of saving you and saving me. God came down to earth that through his sacrifice, we might know him.
Like I said before, Men build comradery by action, by doing things together. God gives us a life full of action, and he wants to be there with us. God is down in the dirt with us, to build comradery with us, so we can trust him with our lives, so he can pick us up when we fall, to celebrate our victories, sympathize when we mourn. God wants to build that comradery with us so that in anything, football, school, daily life, that he could go with us and we could live for him.
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
