It seems life is a lot like working out. I think power lifting can teach you a lot about who you are, but I think it may also help us see who God is. See when life gets hard, when more weight is added to the bar, we can do one of two things. First, the easiest thing to do is to blame God. God, why did you put more weight on my shoulders, can’t you see I’m struggling? God, why did you give my loved one cancer? God, why did you curse me? It’s so easy to go this route. It’s a rabbit hole, soon you’ll find yourself blaming God for every inconvenience in your life. You’ll turn to doubt. Start to think “whatever happened to ‘God won’t give me more than I can handle?’” Maybe He won’t but the devil will. He’ll throw on more weight than you can carry, trying to crush you. He’ll whisper in your ear how weak you are, he’ll tell you you’re worthless. This tears you away from God, blaming Him for what the devil is doing behind your back. The devil wants nothing more for you to blame God for your challenges in life. So, you can play that game if you want.
Or when life gets tough, you remember who your spotter is. That’s God. He’s not the one putting more weight on your shoulders, He’s the one screaming in your ear to keep pushing. He knows you have it in you to keep fighting. God’s the one yelling one more rep, just one more rep. He’s not the one making things heavier, He’s the one who’s behind you, hyping you up, giving you strength. And when you fall, cause sometimes we will fall, He’s the one catching the bar. He’ll lift it off of you when you’re collapsing. He’ll help you back up and then He’ll put the bar back on your shoulders, He’ll tell you to do it again. He’s relentless, He’ll tell you to do it again, one more rep, “I know you have one more rep in you, push through.”
And it’s okay to get angry with God. I get mad at God a lot, but the point is that you don’t stay there. You can yell at your spotter as you’re pushing back with every muscle in your body, but at the end of the day, you need to acknowledge that even though you didn’t like the situation, even though you were challenged, God is one who got you through. He is your spotter in life. There’s a lot of BS you need to push through in life. You can quit and blame God, you can throw in the towel, walk away or you can adjust your stance, grip the bar, and listen to God when He says one more rep.
